Western Lagoon Desludge
GMB Water will commence essential maintenance at the Springs Road Wastewater Treatment Plant in early July with thedesludging of the Western Aeration Lagoon for approximately 10-12 weeks. This work is critical to maintain safe and effective wastewater treatment.
Specialist contractors will dredge sludge, dewater it on-site, and transport the material to Council’s temporary storage site.
Residents may notice stronger odours than usual – up to 1.5km or more around the lagoon. This may vary depending on:
- Wind speed and direction
- Humidity and temperature
- Time of day
EPA advises that while these odours may be unpleasant, they are not harmful to health.
Council has implemented several measures to help minimise the smell:
- Timing works during cooler months to reduce odour spread
- Using specialised equipment to speed up the process
- Applying odour control additives, if necessary.
The following simple suggestions may assist in managing odours:
- Close windows and doors when odours are noticeable
- Use air purifiers, scented candles, or odour-neutralising sprays
- Reschedule outdoor activities if needed
- Consider working from alternative locations (libraries, cafes, or homes/offices outside the area
The lagoon was last desludged in January 2023. A recent survey shows it’s once again nearing capacity, requiring action.
The good news is, our new treatment plant, expected to be operational in 2027, will eliminate the need for future desludging. Once the new plant is operational, the lagoon will be drained and all sludge removed for the last time. The new plant is also designed with odour management in mind, so no more unpleasant smells!
