What we do

With a strong focus on customers, we deliver efficient and affordable services, including wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, bore water supply, and recycled water treatment and distribution. These efforts continue to support the people and businesses of Mount Barker and its surrounds, while working towards the community’s shared vision for environmental sustainability.

Septic tanks and desludging

To help keep things flowing smoothly, GMB Water runs a regular Septic Tank Desludge Program for all properties connected to our Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS). This scheduled maintenance helps prevent blockages and avoid costly plumbing issues—both on your property and across the broader wastewater network.

Trade waste

Trade waste is any used water and substances from commercial, industrial, business trade or manufacturing activities that are discharged to our sewerage system for removal and treatment. We accept trade waste into our sewerage system wherever possible, but to discharge trade waste, you must have authorisation and comply with the authorisation conditions.

Where we service

GMB Water provides wastewater and recycled water services to over 15,000 household and business customers through four schemes across the townships of Mount Barker, Littlehampton, Nairne, Brukunga, Echunga, Meadows and Macclesfield.

Recycled Water

Recycled water is wastewater that has been treated and then further refined to make it safe and suitable for specific uses. It can be used for things like irrigating sporting grounds and gardens, watering non-food crops, supporting wetlands, flushing toilets, industrial processes, and dust suppression. Recycling water reduces the amount of treated wastewater released into the environment, increases how much we reuse, and helps create a more secure and sustainable water supply for the community. This recycled water is already being used across Mount Barker’s sporting fields, open spaces, and public gardens—helping our region stay green while reducing pressure on drinking water supplies. GMB Water is committed to recycling 100% of wastewater by 2035.

Wastewater

GMB Water provides services through the collection, treatment, storage, distribution and disposal (including by sale of recycled water) of wastewater, via a community management wastewater scheme (CMWS) or a sewer scheme. Whether you're connected to a sewer system or a community-managed scheme, we take care of the full journey of your wastewater—from collection to treatment to responsible reuse—supporting public health, environmental protection, and long-term water security for our region.

GMB Water is committed to supporting the thriving Greater Mount Barker region by providing essential water recovery services that sustain a strong and vibrant community. As South Australia's largest local government-run wastewater and recycling scheme, GMB Water owns and operates services designed to provide greater water security for the area.

Previously these services have been delivered by the Mount Barker District Council, specifically the Wastewater Team, and in 2025 these same people will be delivering services for GMB Water, a wholly owned and dedicated subsidiary of Council.

This change ensures the same trusted service continues, with a renewed focus on meeting the needs of the community into the future.
