Recycled Water

Recycled water is wastewater that has been treated and then further refined to make it safe and suitable for specific uses. It can be used for things like irrigating sporting grounds and gardens, watering non-food crops, supporting wetlands, flushing toilets, industrial processes, and dust suppression. Recycling water reduces the amount of treated wastewater released into the environment, increases how much we reuse, and helps create a more secure and sustainable water supply for the community. This recycled water is already being used across Mount Barker’s sporting fields, open spaces, and public gardens—helping our region stay green while reducing pressure on drinking water supplies. GMB Water is committed to recycling 100% of wastewater by 2035.

Meadows Recycled Water Supply

GMB Water operates the Meadows Wastewater Treatment Plant, which collects and treats sewage from local homes in Meadows to a high standard, making it safe for reuse.

If your property receives recycled water, you’ll see a purple (lilac) water meter at your boundary. Recycled water is supplied through a separate system from your drinking water.

Currently, recycled water from the Meadows plant is provided to homes in the Mawson Green and Saxon Hyde subdivisions.

Recycled water should only be sued for specific purposes - you can use recycled water for:

  • Watering lawns, gardens, fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers
  • Flushing toilets
  • Washing cars
  • Filling ornamental ponds or water features (with no fish)

It is important to remember that recycled water is not treated to the same standard as drinking water. Recycled water should NOT be used for:

  • Drinking (including pets)
  • Cooking or rinsing food
  • Baths, showers, or handwashing
  • Household cleaning
  • Washing clothes or using a washing machine
  • Evaporative coolers or air conditioners
  • Filling swimming pools or spas
  • Recreational water play (e.g. under sprinklers)

Recycled water is a valuable resource and following these guidelines helps keep everyone safe while making the most of every drop.

Connecting your recycled water in Meadows

Each allotment has a purple (lilac) recycled water meter installed at the front boundary. This meter is tagged and locked in the ‘off’ position until all connection requirements are met. Under the Recycled Water Guidelines and the direction of the Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR), properties are not permitted to connect to GMB Water’s recycled water system until specific conditions are satisfied.

Before a home can be occupied, a recycled water meter will be installed and the recycled water supply properly connected and approved.

For new build homes, all plumbing work, recycled water, rainwater, and any cross-connection points must be audited by a licensed plumber or builder. The Certificate of Compliance must be submitted to GMB Water.

If you're unsure about the process or your responsibilities, please speak with your licensed plumber or contact GMB Water for more information.

For conveyancers

For properties in Meadows connected to the recycled (non-drinking) water supply, a final meter reading and a cross-connection audit are required as part of the settlement process.

In accordance with the Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR) requirements, a cross-connection audit must be completed prior to the property being occupied by the new owner.

To arrange this service, the conveyancer acting on behalf of the vendor must contact GMB Water at least  14 days prior to settlement. This can be done by emailing customerservice@gmbwater.au  or by completing the online request form below.

Once the request is received, GMB Water will instruct its licensed plumbing contractor to undertake a final recycled water meter reading and to carry out a cross-connection audit of both the internal and external plumbing systems.

Please note that access to both the inside and outside of the property is required to complete the audit. An invoice for this service, along with total usage to date, will be issued to the conveyancer for inclusion in the settlement documentation.
