Using recycled water safely

GMB Water operates South Australia's largest council-run wastewater treatment and recycled water scheme, aiming for 100% reuse of treated wastewater. This initiative supports environmental conservation, reduces pressure on natural water sources, and provides a secure alternative water supply for non-drinking purposes. However, using recycled water safely and responsibly is essential to protect public health and ensure compliance with local regulations.

What is recycled water used for?

Recycled water is treated to a high standard and is suitable for various non-drinking applications, including:

  • Watering lawns, gardens, fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers
  • Flushing toilets
  • Washing cars
  • Filling ornamental ponds and water features (without fish)

What not to use recycled water for

Despite its benefits, recycled water is not safe for consumption or direct contact with the body. Customers must avoid using recycled water for:

  • Drinking (including pets)
  • Cooking or rinsing food
  • Personal washing (baths, showers, cleaning teeth, bidets, hand basins)
  • Household cleaning
  • Filling swimming pools or spas
  • Recreational water activities (e.g., playing under sprinklers)
  • Washing clothes or using in washing machines
  • Evaporative coolers or air conditioners

Similarly, bore water must not be used for drinking, food preparation, watering edible plants, or filling pools.

Your responsibilities as a recycled water user

To ensure the safe and efficient use of recycled water, residents are expected to:

  • Report leaks, bursts, or water quality issues immediately
  • Provide safe access to your recycled water meter for GMB Water staff to monitor usage and billing
  • Install any additional infrastructure (e.g., pumps or filters) needed to maintain flow rates, using a licensed plumber
  • Use recycled water only at the designated supply address—it must not be redirected or shared with other properties

GMB Water oversight and audits

To maintain safety and compliance, the GMB Water conducts periodic audits of properties connected to the recycled water system. These audits ensure:

  • No cross-connections between recycled water and drinking water systems
  • Proper installation and maintenance of plumbing infrastructure
  • Timely rectification of any non-compliance issues

If a cross-connection is found, the recycled water supply will be disconnected until the issue is resolved and verified through a follow-up audit.

Recycled water is a valuable resource that supports the region's environmental and community goals. By following the guidelines and using recycled water responsibly, customers can contribute to a more sustainable future while protecting public health.
