Native Water Ribbon Management at Laratinga Wetlands
From 13 to 17 October 2025, GMB Water will be undertaking a carefully planned operation to selectively remove native water ribbon (Triglochin procerum) from Basin 2 of the Laratinga Wetlands. This work is essential to restore adequate water flow between Basin 1 and Basin 2, ensuring the wetlands continue to function effectively as a wastewater polishing facility.
From 13 to 17 October 2025, GMB Water will be undertaking a selective removeal of native water ribbon (Triglochin procerum) from Basin 2 of the Laratinga Wetlands. This work is essential to restore adequate water flow between Basin 1 and Basin 2, ensuring the wetlands continue to function effectively as a wastewater polishing facility. Over recent years, the dense growth of water ribbon has begun to obstruct the outlet pipe, increasing the risk of overflow and reducing the system’s efficiency.
GMB Water has received approval through a Native Vegetation Clearance Notification, and the removal process will be conducted with great care and environmental sensitivity. Rather than discarding the plants, we will replant the removed water ribbon in other areas of the wetlands where it can continue to thrive without impacting water movement. This approach supports both the ecological health of the wetlands and the operational needs of the wastewater system.
This project reflects GMB Water’s commitment to sustainable water management and the protection of native vegetation. By balancing environmental care with infrastructure needs, we aim to protect the long-term health of the Laratinga Wetlands while maintaining their critical role in our region’s water treatment process. We thank the community for their ongoing support and understanding as we carry out these important works.
